Mister President,

We address this letter to you out of desperation, because unfortunately we frequently receive atrocious images regarding the living conditions of animals in Romania.

In France, and throughout the rest of the world, these images generate utmost disbelief and indignation.

We cannot comprehend that in Romania, a country we consider to be civilized despite its many problems, people can still behave in such an inhumane and barbaric manner. Other European countries have laws to protect animals, and these laws are fully implemented. However, although Romania signed the Convention of Washington on 14 August 1986, the country does neither seem to respect its commitment, nor does it respect the Universal Declaration of Animal Rights.

We believe it is the duty of each country’s authorities to actively look after its citizens’ wellbeing, but also to care for the animal and environmental welfare. The government is in charge of enforcing laws, but it is also each individual’s responsibility since it should be considered as a civic duty.

At the present time millions of animals are suffering from torture, rape and all sorts of cruelty in Romania, carried out by adults but also by children. Dogs and cats eyes are being put out without reason! Animal shelters are affected by extreme poverty, as are zoos, where wild animals, deprived of their freedom, die of hunger and dehydration. The horses, faithful and brave workers who stood by humans for centuries, and continue to do this, die on the road sides and are sometimes even tortured, while many donkeys , docile and submissive by nature, have to endure the same fate.

A few rare volunteers are attempting, with little resources, to fight and to restrict overpopulation amongst cats and dogs, a major problem in Romania!

It is for all these reasons that we call upon you, to take the adequate measures for the sake of Life and respect of Life, because you are, and we are human beings above all, who need to look after an already rather ailing planet.

In reception of this letter, we firmly boycott a visit to Rumania until this barbaric practice, shameful of a civilized country, is not totaly abolished and banned. Besides, no image and product of the Rumania will enter in our home.
